Gemini is the sign of the twins, the person with a dual nature and a trickster-like personality. It's also ruled by, or linked to, the planet Mercury, which is associated with communication and writing. If ever there was a man who fit the archetype of Gemini, it would have to be Rupert Everett, the charming actor and star of films as varied as An Ideal Husband, Another Country and The Next Best Thing. He is also the author of two breezy books, The Hairdressers of St. Tropez and Hello Darling, Are You Working? Rupert's Sun, which represents his place in the world, is in Gemini, conjunct (very close to) his Mercury.

When someone has a planet in the sign that it rules (such as Venus in Taurus or Pluto in Scorpio) it's considered somewhat blessed or fortunate because the sign and the planet "belong" together. Of course, what many folks forget when reading about astrology is that we all have free will. If we are born with certain gifts and don't use them, the universe can't force us to take advantage of our good fortune. It's like having an uncollected lottery ticket. Luckily, when it comes to cashing in on his wit and gift for language, Rupert has not wasted any of his time or talent.

The Water Influence

Gemini is also the sign of the ultimate social butterfly, and although Rupert is fond of clubbing and making the scene, his chart also shows another side to his nature: the homebody who'd make, dare I say it, an ideal husband. Rupert's Venus and Mars, the planets that represent his love nature, make a wide conjunction to each other in the homey, family-oriented sign of Cancer. For now, he has only spoken of being dedicated to his dog, but there's no question that once he finds the right chap, he'll stick with him through thick and thin, and will probably put Martha Stewart to shame on the home front.

Rupert has also quietly broken ground by being the first, and often only, openly gay male actor that comes to mind when the question "who’s gay in Hollywood?" comes up. In looking at his chart, it's interesting to note that he has Jupiter (planet of good fortune) in Scorpio, the sign linked to sexuality. His Jupiter is retrograde, meaning there might be a subtle twist (or even a karmic reason) for why the planet is so key in his chart. In Rupert's case, coming out and staying out has only helped his career, and hasn't seemed to harm it at all. Perhaps because Scorpio is also associated with secrets, it would have really backfired on a personal, emotional level as well as on a practical career level if he'd stayed in the closet. Instead he's turned into a role model, but without having to deal with as many slings and arrows as Ellen Degeneres.

Rupert's Neptune (planet associated with illusions, and film in particular) is also in Scorpio and also retrograde. Again, there is more influence in his chart that shows not necessarily how much success he's gained because of his sexuality, but how much he would have lost if he'd denied the truth to his film-going audience.

The last water placement that's prominent in his chart is his Moon (emotional desires) in Pisces. Having his Sun in a mutable (flexible, adaptable but sometimes too changeable) sign like Gemini, combined with the Moon in the fluid, mutable sign of Pisces, suggests that Rupert is extremely influenced by his environment and the people around him.

The Madonna Influence

In recent years, Rupert has become almost as well known for his friendship with the material girl as he has for his acting. They clubbed around together in the late '90s, and he was featured prominently as her sidekick in a VH-1 documentary. Then, last year, they graced the cover of Vanity Fair together to promote the film they starred in together, The Next Best Thing. (Madonna sparked controversy within the gay community by going on about how Rupert may be gay, but he's still "butch." This sent many self identified "nelly queens" into a tirade, including Village Voice and E! correspondent Michael Musto.)

The movie itself centers around a straight female yoga teacher and her gay male best bud. After a sexy drunken night together she discovers she's pregnant, and they decide to co-parent the child.

This shows yet another archetypal Gemini characteristic for Rupert: the part of his nature that is always searching for a twin, someone to "complete" him. Interestingly, Madonna had another Gemini sidekick who inspired some mini controversies about a decade earlier. In the late '80s she flirted with bisexual Gemini comedienne Sandra Bernhard on the David Letterman Show, and later went on to have a very public falling out with her. Sadly, they're still on the outs, even though they've both discovered the joy of motherhood, and the gentle mysticism of the Kabbalah.

Hopefully Madonna and Rupert's friendship will stand the test of time. Madonna's Moon in picky, practical Virgo is opposite Rupert's Moon in imaginative, empathic Pisces. They each need something from the other emotionally. She needs his unspoken, unconditional love, while he needs her brass tacks realism, and practical caretaking.

They both also have Uranus, planet of friendship, progress and high ideals exactly conjunct in Madonna's sign: Leo. Perhaps by making such a public show of their friendship, they may actually discover the true meaning of their connection. Maybe, as Uranus would dictate, it's to change the world a little bit, in a positive, constructive way. Chances are though, that it will be Rupert, the smart, subtle Gemini, who will be the brains behind whatever they do together.
