Every Olympic
athlete dreams of that “one moment in time,” but only a precious few actually
arrive at that golden moment when their dreams come true. It takes a lot
to beat the best in the world in any pursuit. Talent, training, perseverance
and luck must all combine at just the right time. Surely, astrology plays
a role in this, but what are the astrological ingredients of a gold medal
moment?
To attempt
to answer that question, let’s take a look at some high-profile winning
moments from the Sydney Summer Games. Some events draw more attention
than others, just as some athletes capture the public’s imagination more
than others. It seems that when more public attention is focused on an
event, the astrological indicators become much clearer. There is something
about that mass concentration of consciousness that coincides with more
obvious and exact planetary alignments.
The
100-Meter Sprints
Let’s look at a concrete example. The 100-meter sprints are very popular
contests, with the winner claiming the title of “Fastest Man/Woman in
the World.” The gold medal winner in the women’s race, Marion
Jones, is one of the most high-profile athletes in Sydney.
Our first chart is a biwheel, with the chart for the exact moment of
the race in the inner wheel and on the angles, while the birth chart of
Marion Jones is placed around it in the outer wheel.
To get to
the Olympics, Jones, and any other athlete, had to sacrifice and train
for years. But once they arrive, to perform at their best they need good
transiting aspects. This means that the current positions of the planets
need to form certain angular relationships to the planets of their birth
charts. Astrologers measure the angular relationships between planetary
positions, and they call these relationships “aspects.” Exact transiting
aspects to an athlete’s natal planets set up a powerful exchange between
the individual and the current environment.
Marion Jones
was receiving a lot of planetary assistance when she won her first gold
medal in the 100 meters. Transiting Jupiter at 11 degrees Gemini makes
a harmonious trine (120 degree) aspect to her natal Mercury at 11 degrees
Libra. The trine is considered the most fortunate or flowing aspect, linking
planets in signs of the same element. Transiting Venus at 28 degrees Libra
makes another exact trine aspect to her natal Mars at 28 degrees Gemini,
while transiting Mars closes in on a conjunction to her natal Venus at
5 degrees Virgo. Even the transiting Moon’s North Node, angular at the
event chart IC, makes an exact trine to Jones’ natal North Node at 22
degrees Scorpio.
An
Extra Boost for Jones
But aspects,
while vitally important, are only part of the picture. To really perform
at his best, an athlete needs to be in a good, angular position within
the current, or real-time, chart. In natal astrology, the angles, or pivot
points, of a chart—the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant and IC—are considered
to be especially sensitive or influential. Natal planets placed near an
angle take on extra significance within a birth chart. But the angles
in any chart are especially influential, including the chart for right
here, right now. An athlete’s chances of performing at his best are greatly
increased when the planetary positions in his birth chart occupy one or
more of the current angles.
Even a quick
glance at our first chart reveals that Marion Jones has a distinct astrological
advantage in racing at that exact moment. She was born with a natal Sun-Jupiter
opposition, from Libra to Aries, and that opposition spans the Ascendant-Descendant
axis of the race chart (while also aspecting transiting Uranus in
Aquarius.) This was her race, and she smoked the rest of the field.
The
Thorpedo
The Australians enjoyed a high-profile victory when their "Thorpedo",
Ian Thorpe, won his first gold medal on the first day of the swimming
competition. Our next biwheel depicts his victory in the same real-time
format, with the chart for the winning moment in the inner wheel and on
the angles, and the birth chart of Thorpe displayed around it in the outer
wheel.
Thorpe was
born when Mercury was at the Midheaven in Libra, adding extra significance
to that angle in his birth chart. Both his natal Mercury and Midheaven
are angular at the current Descendant, and trine transiting Neptune in
Aquarius. He has plenty of exact transiting aspects, too. In Libra, transiting
Mercury is conjunct his natal Venus while transiting Venus is conjunct
his natal Sun. Transiting Mars is conjunct his Leo Moon, while the transiting
Moon in Aries exactly trines his natal Neptune at 24 degrees Sagittarius.
The athlete’s
birthdates are available in their bios at www.olympics.org.
Perhaps an understanding of the astrological forces involved can help
you to plan more “golden moments” of your own!
