On
Tuesday, January 9, at 12:24 pm (PST), the Moon grows full in Cancer,
opposing the Sun in Capricorn. This is the first Full Moon of the New Year, and is
also a full lunar eclipse. Eclipses are times when there is a powerful focus
of energy on the Earth, and intentions and prayers made at these times are
stronger and more likely to come true. Imagine it like an archer aiming
for his target. An eclipse is akin to a more powerful bow and arrow. If
one aims well, the target is reached more easily. On the flip side, a strong
bow and arrow can be aimed poorly or haphazardly and there is a greater
chance for harm. That is why an eclipse is an especially important time
to be aware, mindful and to have good intent.
Cancer,
Nourishment and Love
Of all the
signs in the zodiac, Cancer is the one most associated with nourishment.
An image that comes to mind is of the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus
suckling at her breast. This image conveys the tremendous power of the
mother, capable of nurturing and sustaining a young infant, helping him
to grow strong and full. With the Moon in Cancer, this is a good time
to nourish our loved ones and ourselves optimally.
At the core
of nourishment is love. When we hug our friends, smile at our partners
or play with our children, we are extending a healing presence to the
world around us. Love helps us to grow strong, happy and confident. Without
the sustaining foundation of love, most of the good intentions for our
health such as eating right, exercising and taking healing herbs will
have little effect. If you have been feeling cold and emotionally cut
off, the Cancer Full Moon is a good time to extend yourself toward friends,
family and community. By extending love and compassion, these qualities
will return to you and help nourish your own health as well.
Digestion
In medical
astrology, Cancer rules the stomach and digestion. With the Full Moon
in this sign, there can be a greater sensitivity in this area, and it’s
especially important to guard against digestive ailments. The holiday
season can be a time of overindulgence in sweets, alcohol and fatty foods.
This is a good time to return to healthier patterns of eating. If overeating
has upset your digestion, try adding culinary herbs to your meals such
as rosemary, thyme, oregano and mints. These will help reduce digestive
discomfort and will help restore balance to your stomach.
Eclipses
Eclipses
are powerful events that have awed our ancestors for thousands of years.
Astrologically, they tend to have a profound effect for months and even
years afterward. If any of your natal planets (especially your Sun and
Moon) are near the eclipse at 19 degrees Capricorn or Cancer, you may
feel the effect of the eclipse even more deeply. Eclipses can act as turning
points in our lives, times when there is a tremendous possibility of transformation
and growth. Often times, events will happen and people will come into
our lives that have the ability to change our consciousness and alter
how we perceive life. We can take advantage of these times by being especially
aware of how we are living and who we are spending time with. When we
have created a positive environment, wonderful opportunities often present
themselves that can deeply strengthen and nourish our soul.
Cancer
and Capricorn, Twin Poles
Cancer is
related to our more private, deeply-felt emotions, and Capricorn is related
to our foundation and our goals and path in life. Ultimately, this eclipse
points to the need to balance these two sides of us. One side needs time
for inner work, a space where we can feel quiet, introspective and allow
powerful feelings to well up and be expressed. The other side needs time
to direct energy toward our ambitions, to fulfill our hopes and dreams
through disciplined and concerted action.
We can work
to balance this polarity by finding time in our lives for both aspects.
We can access the Cancer side of ourselves by expressing our feelings
through talking with friends and family, making art, crying or writing
in a journal. We can access our Capricorn energy through regular, disciplined
effort such as a yoga practice, hiking in the mountains or working on
a writing or building project. Freeing up deeply-held emotions allows
for greater fluidity and energy when we direct ourselves outward with
our Capricorn qualities. And regular directed energy helps to avoid any
emotional ruts that Cancer can get stuck in. This is a wonderful time
to balance both these parts and come into greater well-being and equilibrium.
Good health to you!
