Global Warming Reports

Last week a flurry of reports was issued regarding global warming, with the most prominent being The Washington Post story about the accelerated melting of Antarctica's ice sheets. Elsewhere, UN climate experts warned that the impact of warming temperatures will be much sooner and more severe than previously predicted. Also, environmental groups asked the Supreme Court to force the EPA to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.

The simultaneous appearance of these global warming reports seems random, but astrologically correspond to Mercury turning retrograde on March 4. When Mercury goes into its retrograde phase, opinions and facts are reconsidered. Mercury happened to be exactly square Pluto as it turned retrograde, adding a level of urgency and intensity to potential catastrophic scenarios. Mercury-Pluto carries a deep desire to persuade.

The downside of this aspect is that Mercury is in Pisces, where the truth is strongly modified by non-scientific perspectives, such as intuition, beliefs, or hidden agendas. Most of the global warming reports were immediately attacked directly, or sidetracked with the suggestion that more study is needed. With Mercury in Pisces, either side of this issue may be relying more on unrealistic expectations or fears than hard evidence.

Astrologers can monitor the effects of global warming by correlating hard outer planet aspects with historic natural disasters caused by weather anomalies. Hurricane Katrina is the most recent example of this, which unfolded during a Jupiter-Neptune square. As the next hurricane season begins, Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune will be forming a powerfully dynamic T-Square, a good sign that more weather anomalies are upon us. Then, by 2010, the epochal Uranus-Pluto square will begin to influence weather patterns.

Al Qaeda and Zarqawi, Philosophical Differences

In response to last week's article on Zarqawi, a NewsScope reader writes, "Nice analysis of the chart of the supposed Mr. Big of Al Qaeda in Iraq, but what about the bombing compared to the chart of Al Qaeda itself?" In fact, Al Qaeda's horoscope does show some strong activation during the February 22 incident that pushed Iraq toward the abyss of civil war.

Al Qaeda's chart (February 23, 1998; 5:00 am; London) features Chiron conjunct the Midheaven. In Scorpio, Chiron is closely associated with the warrior archetype and is toughened by aspects to Mars, Uranus, and Saturn, which also add elements of unpredictable ferocity and brutality. On February 22, transiting  Jupiter was exactly conjunct Al Qaeda's Chiron (orb 0º03'), bringing a major opportunity to foment chaos.

The horoscopes for Zarqawi (October 30, 1966) and Al Qaeda show very tight connections: notably, his Sun-Venus in Scorpio exactly trine Al Qaeda's Sun-Jupiter in Pisces. The transiting Sun activated this connection on February 22. Also, Zarqawi's Mars is exactly conjunct Al Qaeda's fateful North Node in Virgo. Transiting Uranus was exactly aligned with this link during the bombing.

Some deep fissures exist between these two. Al Qaeda's Mars in Pisces is oppressed by Zarqawi's Saturn in Pisces, and made nervous by the opposition to Zarqawi's Uranus-Pluto. Al Qaeda's preference is to unite Islamic factions against the "crusaders", not create war between Sunnis and Shiites. However, over the next week, as transiting Mars and Uranus square each other, both Zarqawi's and Al Qaeda's horoscopes are primed for terrorist activities.

Anna Nicole Smith Goes to Washington

Last Tuesday former Playmate of the Year Anna Nicole Smith* had her day at the Supreme Court, as lawyers argued over who should be the chief beneficiary of her deceased billionaire husband's estate. Anna Nicole was 26 when she married the 89-year-old oil tycoon. He died 14 months later, beginning a 10-year court battle between the blond bombshell and the billionaire's son.

Anna Nicole Smith was born with her Sun in playful Sagittarius (November 28, 1967; Mexia, TX; time unknown) square Jupiter, a double influence emphasizing opportunities, fame, and prosperity. Her husband died on August 5, 1995 as transiting Jupiter was right on her Sun, and undoubtedly, she expected to inherit a fortune. However, transiting Pluto was due to cross her Sun, and complications set in.

Anna Nicole's Mars is located at 27º Capricorn, which happens to be exactly conjunct the U.S. Pluto (the ruler of the U.S. Scorpio Rising horoscope). In a young woman's chart, Mars can represent the men she attracts, and in this case, she drew in an American plutocrat, one of the nation's ruling  personalities. As she grew older, Anna Nicole began to assume some of the strength and determination signified by this placement.

Her Sun trines Saturn, further strengthening her as she ages. Last week transiting Saturn formed a supportive trine to her Sun and Saturn, and several of the justices seemed favorably disposed to her case. A ruling is expected in late June, when her progressed Venus (symbolizing money) is conjunct her Sun. This rare and extremely favorable alignment suggests that she will emerge victorious and wealthy.
