Jupiter, the planet of hope, entered innovative Aquarius this morning. After spending a year in tradition-bound Capricorn where survival of the fittest and individual ambition are the highest values, we are shifting to a more collective view of ourselves. Aquarius is the sign of the network in which everyone is connected. Hierarchical Capricorn is the epitome of unregulated capitalism. Transformational Pluto’s recent entry into Capricorn exposed the dark underbelly of unlimited self-interest and the high cost of a lack of government oversight.
Aquarius reflects the community organizer perspective of president-elect Barack Obama. Obama is a Leo, yet with Aquarius rising in his chart he personifies many of this sign’s characteristics. Futuristic Aquarius moves us toward a vision of humanity as a whole, rather than retaining the traditional patterns of separation by race, gender, nationality and religion. The president-elect is not a black man or a white man: he is both. He went to Harvard, a well-endowed institution of the rich, and planted his political roots in the impoverished south side of Chicago. He was born in Hawaii and grew up in the Midwest, Indonesia and Hawaii. Obama is a prototype of the new American, a world citizen operating from principles of cooperation rather than competition.
While Obama may be the charismatic cover boy for this new Aquarian impulse, this is a sign of collective responsibility rather than top-down control. He may be an inspiration to us, but Jupiter’s presence here will open all of our minds to fresh solutions for our personal problems and contribute to the wellbeing of all. This expansive planet will join metaphysical Neptune in May, July and December, offering spiritual support to this intellectual expansion to balance the head with the heart. For now, though, we are gifted with the chance to look outside the box and see new connections in our lives and in the world around us that make sense and provide solutions. Albert Einstein said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” It is not what we now know that matters but what we are willing to learn that will make the difference.
