A Most Magical Valentine's Day: The spirit of Valentine’s Day, like many holidays, has been diluted by commercialism. We buy greeting cards—about a billion a year—instead of writing letters to express our feelings and often exchange gifts with a sense of obligation instead of with joyous abandon. Valentine’s Day is not rooted in planetary cycles and has no special astrological significance. Its occurrence with the Sun in cerebral Aquarius has virtually no relevance to romance. Among the Christian martyrs and saints named Valentine none were associated with love, eroticism or gift boxes of chocolate. Lupercalia, an ancient Roman fertility rite, occurred in mid-February and was Christianized as St. Valentine’s Day.
The spirit of romance, though, is especially powerful this Valentine’s Day. Venus, the planet of love, is in sensitive Pisces, her sign of exaltation where personal feelings are touched by divine inspiration. Jupiter, the planet of generosity and good fortune, is close to Venus on February 14, adding a spirit of joy and hope to the occasion. Venus and Jupiter were called the “benefics” in traditional astrology, indicating the good fortunate they bring. Their annual union is always fortuitous, especially in Pisces where both planets are especially strong.
Still, the planetary party gets even better on the 14th as the Moon is also in Pisces, kissing sweet Venus and optimistic Jupiter with its imagination, idealism and compassion. This alignment is almost magical as it evokes dreams of perfect partnership and invites us to merge our souls in a boundless spirit of hope. It is an idyllic ocean of imagination that carries us far from the shores of pain and emotional separation to remind us of the deep connections we share with one another. It is an event worth celebrating.
This Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to tap into a limitless pool of love and acceptance that can wear away the doubts we have about ourselves and others. It is an angelic environment in which we sense our highest potential as loving beings free to create a more caring world. The power of romance will be very strong, yet it is not meant to lead to pairing off in separate corners where some are warmed by partnership and others chilled by isolation. This Valentine’s Day is about love to be shared with friends, neighbors, co-workers and strangers alike. If you are fortunate enough to be in a loving relationship, this is a time to share that joy with those who are alone. Invite a single friend to join you for dinner or spend some precious time with an individual who lacks love and companionship. The planets are reminding us of the words of those musical sages Lennon and McCartney who aptly said, “The love you take is equal to the love you make.”
