Fear and Freedom

Freedom comes at a price. Egyptians are in the streets fighting for it now but how many lives will be lost in the struggle and what will come next? Some may be afraid of change but it’s inevitable, especially these days. North Africa is changing with one government falling in Tunisia and another about to fall in Egypt. The recent conjunction of philosophical Jupiter and revolutionary Uranus may have set these shifts into motion and another shockwave comes with the Aquarius New Moon joined with energetic Mars on February 2. This Sun-Moon conjunction is further electrified by an edgy 45-degree semisquare by Aquarius’ rebellious ruling planet Uranus. Surprises can be anticipated on personal and collective levels and are best met with flexibility and a willingness to explore unconventional options. Holding on too tightly only increases pressure until something explodes.

Nations, like individuals, have birth charts. The problem, though, is determining what moment to use for the event. Egypt’s roots, for example, go back to antiquity and are beyond the limits of precise historical timing. Fortunately, astrologer-historian Nicholas Campion has done extensive research on national charts and published “The Book of World Horoscopes” in 1988 to address this issue. In the case of Egypt he presents birth charts of its independence from Great Britain and of the re-establishment of the Egyptian Kingdom in 1922. However, the birth chart of the current government is based on the founding of the Egyptian Republic on June 18, 1953 at 11:30 pm GMT in Cairo. Current events substantiate the effectiveness of this chart.

The current position of radical Uranus is precisely 90-degrees from the Sun in the Egyptian horoscope. This stressful square to the symbol of the head of state is one indication that Mubarak is about to go. Astrologer Bruce Scofield pointed out that a powerful pair of progressions (based on a traditional day-for-year forecasting system) are also shaking this chart. Progressed Uranus is coming to a square to Mercury and the Progressed Sun is joining Progressed Pluto (transformation) this year. This may be more technical details than some of you want but the point is that major changes are appearing in Egypt’s chart in several powerful forms. Astrologer Ed Tamplin has previously reported that Saturn’s presence in Libra has regularly changed the Egyptian leadership from its 1922 independence from the UK, the 1953 Republic with General Nasser, and Hosni Mubarak’s rise to power in 1981 when Anwar Sadat was assassinated.

Whenever radical changes occur it’s natural to be concerned about future stability. Egypt is the most populated country in the Arab world and has been an active participant in the Mid-East peace process for decades. A repressive dictatorship has kept the masses in check with economic and diplomatic support from the U.S.; concern about Islamic fundamentalism in Egypt is understandable. However, the high-frequency planetary dynamics that we’re currently experiencing suggest that we don’t have to fall into the predictable patterns of the past. Positive change is most likely to occur on a collective level when we apply it in our individual lives. As each of us cultivates the courage and curiosity to create a more desirable future for ourselves we are clearing the way for religious, government, corporate and other groups to follow our innovative lead.
