Sammy swings that powerful stroke, head down on the ball. Another baseball leaves the yard headed for the coveted realm of souvenir-land. Can he maintain the furious home run pace of the past two seasons?

Really a Scorpio?

“Holy Cow,” as the late Harry Carey so often reported. Sammy’s hit another dinger. Trotting around the bases with that multi-million dollar smile of his, Scorpio Sammy (born November 12, 1968, in San Pedro de Marcois, Dominican Republic) thrills the crowds. You’d never know he’s a Scorpio. In fact, he has three planets in Scorpio. Certainly you’d expect more intensity. But Neptune, a softening, illusive effect, aligns with his Sun sign. This makes him appear mellow, gentle and easy-going. Don’t let that fool you. His inner furnace burns nuclear fuel—that you can safely bet. But Neptune’s fog concealing his Scorpionic nature explains some of Sammy’s lack of regard in baseball despite his abilities and accomplishments.

When we think of home runs, who comes to mind? McGwire. Yet Sammy twice hit more homers in one season than Babe Ruth or Roger Maris. He owns several other home run records, including hitting two round trip blasts in one inning. Overshadowed by the strength and prodigious blasts of McGwire, Sammy goes about his business shattering records and delighting spectators.

Of course, Neptune conjunct the Sun does give Sammy an instinct for the ball. Perhaps that’s why he can lift the horsehide into the clouds and to the amazement of the world. With the Neptune-Sun connection, he carries a strongly compassionate nature, too. Sammy gave a million dollars for relief after a hurricane pummeled his homeland, the Dominican Republic. Though many major league players hail from the Dominican, few offered such generosity and concern.

A Good Sport

Ball caps tip to both Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa for the exceptional ride they gave us in the 1998 baseball season. The grace, respect and affection shown by these men recreated faith in sportsmanship, competition and dignity in sports. For one thing, Sammy holds strong connections to McGwire’s chart. You gotta believe these two really like each other.

Sammy’s chart possesses the often-difficult Leo Moon. This lunar reference bears a reputation for demanding its due in attention and adoration. Known for its flexing of ego muscles, the Leo Moon often curses its owner with bombastic self proclamations. On the other hand, a confident and secure Leo planet displays all traits and talents without overstating. It just goes out, does what it does exceptionally and lets others form their own reactions. And it’s gracious with its responses. Sammy exhibits the secure Leo Moon when he gives that salute of his, flashing those teeth in the afternoon sun at Wrigley field. A kind and magnanimous heart resides in this man. Remember the phenomenal congratulatory greeting Sammy gave McGwire on his record-breaking blast? No need for jealousy. Sammy knew his was coming, too.

Libra Influence?

Maybe it’s the Libra planets in his chart. The energetic and assertive Mars shares the astrological clubhouse with the wild and crazy Uranus, both in the balancing sign, Libra. This combo can serve up a raw energy that knows no bounds. But with focus and application, look at the results. Uranus represents the humanistic side of life—the ability to maintain objective understanding, compassion for the downtrodden (or underdogs) and the urge to reach out in a big way. Libran influence offers social grace, politeness and idealizes the nature of relationships. Look at the tact that Sammy employed in both the ‘98 and ‘99 home run marathons he shared with competitor Mark McGwire (a Libra sun sign).

Good for Us

Sammy’s good for baseball. He’s good for the cursed Cubs. He’s good for the notorious fans in the cheap seats at Wrigley Field, the Bleacher Bums. He’s good for our national pastime. He inspires us all to believe and dream, fulfilling Neptune’s urge to uplift.

This year, karma comes knocking on Sammy’s door. With the influences of the disciplining Saturn and the amplifying Jupiter in Taurus opposing his Scorpio planets, just watch. Sammy will have another great year. His hard work, dedication (Saturn) and his opportunistic style (Jupiter) receive the rewards. Watch Sammy go this year. This could be his year. And it couldn’t happen to a nicer person.
