Now for Some Good News: There has been much discussion in this blog and elsewhere in the astrological community about this year’s rare triple conjunction of Jupiter, Neptune and Chiron in Aquarius that will be with us through the end of the year. The close proximity of optimistic Jupiter with idealistic Neptune right now has led some financial astrologers to assume that we are in a bubble of hope that is likely to burst when this transit ends. This is a symbolically reasonable idea since these giant gassy planets usually paint pictures of life as we’d like it to be rather than what it actually is. They offer inspiring visions that can seed future growth yet generally ignore unpleasant facts and details that don’t support these uplifting ideas. It’s understandable, then, why some astrologers think that those who believe that the economy has hit bottom and is on the way up may be fooling themselves.

Jupiter, Neptune and Chiron in the community-oriented sign Aquarius represent expansion of our collective consciousness and the emergence of new concepts about the structure of society. I admit that this can seem like a dream without substance, leaving us mired in political polarization that will grow more bitter and divisive. I think, though, that we already have a great deal  of support among individuals and institutions that could serve as a model to fulfill the noblest aspirations of our Aquarian ideals. That evidence is based on the overwhelming amount of cooperation that exists every single day. The incidents of violence are few in most people’s daily lives. Cars zoom in opposite directions separated by painted lines yet rarely collide. We go to work and school. We stop at red lights. We go shopping and pay for what we buy. Sure, some of this exemplary behavior is reinforced by fear of punishment, but the number of acts of cooperation in families, at schools, among co-workers and in public life vastly outnumber the conflicts.

The lessons of generous Jupiter are usually thought to be the creation of new opportunities, which is true. However, another gift of this visionary planet is to open our eyes to the positive elements that already exist in our lives. I don’t expect us to eradicate fear with a feel good picture of human harmony and cooperation. Yet simply recognizing all the things that work in our lives can bring some light to our darker days. Take a look around your world and you will find more success than failure. Recognizing the many ways that we function intelligently all the time is not a denial of our problems but a powerful awakening that can help solve them.
