Angelina: Super Model For Success in Hollywood

Angelina Jolie is far from the typical Gemini. Although she does have a "twin-like" relationship with her brother James (which the media had a field day with after she gushed all over him like a lover at the Oscars!), she often acts more like a wild fire sign than a detached, composed air sign. That's because the talented twenty-five-year-old actress has several fire planets in her chart. Astrologically, fire represents action and passion, and a certain amount of child-like naivete and fearlessness, qualities that certainly describe Jolie.

She has made a name for herself in a variety of star-caliber performances, including the title role in Gia, the HBO biopic of the self-destructive supermodel, for which she won a Golden Globe; and Lisa, a charismatic sociopath in last year's Girl Interrupted, for which she won a Golden Globe and her first Oscar.

Jolie has three key planets closely linked in her chart in the courageous sign of Aries. Her impetuous Aries streak may also explain why she is so gifted at portraying passionate people with poor impulse control, and why she impulsively married the rough-around-the-edges actor/writer Billy Bob Thornton.

A Fiery Gemini Meets Her Match

Actor/writer Thornton is also an Oscar winner (for his 1996 screenplay Sling Blade). Thornton is as fiery as they come, with six (count 'em!) planets in Leo. The two met while filming Pushing Tin, where they played seemingly mismatched but highly compatible married lovers. So what makes their relationship burn so hot? A lot.

On the surface, the easy connection between the two (Jolie has stated that they were friends for some time while both were attached to others) can be attributed to the many trines (a smooth, compatible aspect) in their charts. For instance, her Mars (sex, passion) in Aries trines his Jupiter ( good luck, generosity) and Mercury (communication, intellectual pursuits) in Leo, and conversely, her Jupiter in Aries trines his Mars in Leo.

But the more complex connections lie in the water and air elements in their charts. Jolie's Venus, planet of love, is exactly conjunct (same sign at close degree) Thornton's Uranus (planet of progress, individuality and freedom) in family-oriented Cancer. It's interesting that Thornton, who is old enough to be a peer of Jolie's actual father—actor Jon Voight—will probably push Jolie to reach radically toward the future in love, work and in family matters, as opposed to staying stuck in a traditional mold. Now it might seem like there is absolutely nothing traditional about the wild actress, but Thornton may very well encourage her to go in even more controversial directions than she would on her own!

Another powerful connection is the exact square (difficult but growth-oriented aspect) between Thornton's Uranus (that unpredictable, controversial planet again!) and Jolie's Uranus, which is in Libra, the sign of partnership. It wouldn't be surprising if the "make or break" situation in their relationship revolves around having or raising children. Millions of couples go through rocky transitions when they shift roles from honeymooning lovers to domesticated parents, but this couple can expect much, much more conflict than most in this area.

Finally, Thornton's South Node of the Moon (which many astrologers believe represents past lives) is conjunct Jolie's Mercury, an indication that in this lifetime, he owes her knowledge. And you thought he was only offering his good ole boy charm!

Engagement Interrupted

Before hooking up with Jolie, Thornton was engaged to another second generation actress, Laura Dern, whose parents are actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd. Although Thornton's Moon in Aquarius blends nicely with Dern's Aquarius Sun, the karma between these two seems muddled at best. Dern's Mars, planet of sexual attraction, is conjunct Thornton's Neptune in Libra. Although Neptune is a wonderfully imaginative planet (their potential as an acting team looks stupendous) it can also be associated with massive confusion.

Although the chemistry between Dern and Thornton was undeniably strong, the potential for misunderstandings was too, especially since Thornton's Neptune also squared Dern's Jupiter. Dern's Jupiter in Cancer is also right on top of Thornton's Uranus, which suggests that as the years progress she will continue to mysteriously shine good luck on her former beau (especially when Jupiter moves into the late degrees of Cancer a couple of years from now).

It certainly seems like Dern is destined to give more than she gets to Thornton in this lifetime, and their charts reveal why. Her South Node, representing past lives, is right on his Saturn, planet of tough lessons, in the sexual, but sometimes overly dark and intense sign of Scorpio. Let's hope she pays back her karmic debt to him in this go 'round and never has to see his face again in the next incarnation!

Will This Union Be Gone in 60 Seconds?

Thornton, who was married four times before he tied the knot with Jolie (who was married briefly to actor Jonny Lee Miller) in Vegas last month, seems to like trouble in his relationships, and this union should have its fair share. But the stars are lining up in the newlyweds' favor, as first lucky Jupiter, then hard-working Saturn, move into Gemini (this summer), bringing good fortune and maturity to the bride.

Then, these same planets move into Cancer, where both husband and wife share a planetary connection, and then finally into Leo, which favors Thornton. The next few years will probably be the most thrilling for the couple and the smoothest. If things don't work out, Jolie, who is now the proud owner of a "Billy Bob" tattoo, can always call up fellow Gemini Johnny Depp for a good laser surgeon referral. Back when Depp was head over heels for Jolie's Girl Interrupted pal, Winona, he had her name tattooed on his bod. Time will tell whether Jolie and Thornton are meant to be together 4-Ever.
