This fall's
blockbuster action flick does not star Bruce
Willis, Mel Gibson, Sly Stallone
or any other high-testosterone hero. Instead, the hit of fall 2000 is
Charlie's Angels, which features high-octane (and campy)
performances from three Hollywood power chicks…two from California, one
from New York…
Lucy
Liu, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz all share a significant similarity
in their charts. Each of these three women has her Sun in a mutable sign.
Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces) are the most chameleon-like
signs of the zodiac. They adapt to circumstances and become who they're
with and what they are engaged in, to a degree. All of the mutable signs
are flexible, but each has a “flavor” all its own. Lucy's a Sag, Drew
is a Pisces and Cameron is a Virgo. Even Bill Murray, their co-conspirator,
is mutable, born under the sign of Virgo.
Lucy
Liu
Lucy's
a Sagittarius, and displays a lot of typical qualities of this sign. Sag
is ruled by Jupiter, planet of good luck, and often Sag types (especially
in their younger years) find themselves falling into just the right situation.
Lucy told David Letterman she was
the last "angel" to be chosen by Drew Barrymore (who came up
with the movie concept), and that she basically just lucked into the role.
Lucy has a lot more going on, though, than her good fortune and good looks.
She's multi-lingual (fluent in Mandarin), which gives her some of the
"international" flavor of an archetypal Sag. You see, Sag rules
the Ninth House, which is associated with teaching and learning about
other cultures. And, in typical "wacky" Sag style, she plays
the accordion. Most Sagittarians are late bloomers who find their philosophical
calling later in life, but in their younger years they tend to be—let's
see what's a delicate way of putting this—complete goofballs (Brendan
Fraser is a good example).
Drew
Barrymore
Drew
is the ultimate Pisces, perhaps the most mutable of all the signs. Ruled
by dreamy Neptune, she named her film company Flower Productions and has
gone on record as saying she believes in astrology (go Drew!). Very Piscean.
Another trait
that is strongly associated with Drew's mutable sign is the proclivity
toward substance abuse. You see, Pisces, being the last sign of the zodiac,
is thought of as the most empathic. It's as if people of this sign can
intuitively understand the pain of their own experience and all the signs
that came before them. Being that sensitive has its price, and often times
the response of the youthful or astrologically-challenged Pisces is to
"numb out" all the pain by using drugs or alcohol. As a clean
and sober former substance abuser, and the youngest of a very famous acting
dynasty, Drew is wise beyond her age. Her biggest challenge is drawing
boundaries with people she cares for. She may have cleaned up her act
early, but she is drawn to taking care of folks who are still addicted
to magical thinking and self-destructive behavior.
Cameron
Diaz
Cameron
is VERY Virgo. All the "angels" had to learn martial arts to
play their roles, but it was Ms. Diaz who apparently excelled at it. This
is not surprising, since Virgos are known for taking whatever craft they
are involved in quite seriously. They make an attempt to learn every step
of the process. Virgo is also associated with the Sixth House, the house
in the chart that rules health and body (and is influenced by the "shadow"
of the opposite house—the mystical Twelfth). It wouldn't be surprising
if Cameron uses martial arts the rest of her life to keep in good shape,
and as a spiritual practice, too.
With Sun
and Mars in industrious Virgo, Cameron Diaz could be the hardest working
young actress in Hollywood today. She's played a variety of endearing,
sexy and kooky roles in the last few years, most notably Lotte in Spike
Jones' much-lauded Being John Malkovich. For this role,
she scrapped the glamour and nailed an Oscar nomination. Unlike most stars,
Cameron Diaz doesn't mind looking less than gorgeous. Typical of Virgo,
she is humble, and more concerned with work than with superficial things.
The
Angels’ Next Assignments?
So what's
in the stars for the stars of Charlie's Angels? Well, life
may be the most anti-climactic for Lucy Liu, who is just completing (this
fall) two major transits that some folks don't see in a lifetime. Pluto,
the planet of transformation, is currently hovering over her Sun, which
is why she is so in the public eye right now. Before that, in 1999, it
hit her Mercury (planet of communication), which is when her Ally
McBeal popularity first peaked.
It may be
Ms. Liu's love life that gets the next big jolt of astro-energy, when
the lunar eclipse in January 2001 opposes her Venus in Capricorn. She
may get heavy involved during the first six months of the new year with
a colleague, and will have to try extra hard to balance the demands of
a high-power Hollywood career and a romantic life.
Pluto is
hovering over Drew's Neptune as we speak, and will stay very close (within
two degrees) to this Pisces' ruling planet through the beginning of 2001.
Since Neptune is often associated with "illusions" (and movies
are the business of illusion), Drew is apt to take a radical turn in her
career, perhaps finally tackling a character that mirrors her own depth
and demons (an alcoholic, maybe?).
Progressive
and often unpredictable Uranus is making a trine (harmonious aspect) to
Cameron's Uranus as we speak. It seems as if the planets are pushing her
to do something really radical that doesn't just push her career forward,
but also makes the world a radically better place. Cameron for president,
on the Green Party ticket in 2004? Who knows? This angel has the greatest
desire of the three to be of some use on this planet.
