On
October 16, at 12:23 pm, the Moon and the Sun will conjoin at 23 degrees
Libra. Not only will the Sun and Moon be transiting Libra, but Venus and
Mercury will as well. Seven out of the ten planets will be in air signs,
signifying that this is a time for heightened communication and a time
to examine our relationships and our role in the community. On a more
world wide level, this is also when the U.S. will have to examine how
it interrelates with foreign governments and how it can best go about
maintaining a coalition of nations in this time of war.
Libra
Moon, Mirror Moon
One of the
profound aspects of a New Moon in Libra is that this when others will
reflect back what we are projecting. For example, if we are feeling angry
and cynical, we will attract energy that is similar. The types of people
we will meet and the tone of our relationships will reflect internal emotional
states. If you have ever heard some one say "You're projecting"
this is what they mean. Projecting is an psychological word that means
that we are seeing in others what we ourselves are feeling and holding.
Sometimes you may feel the reverse effect. If you are in a room where
someone is very depressed, you may take on their mood. This may be hard
to discern at first until you talk to someone else who is not depressed
at all. Suddenly your mood lifts and you may not even know why.
It is important
at this time to differentiate yourself from the mood and disposition of
others. This may be hard at times. Some people have very powerful, domineering
dispositions that readily affect everyone else. Part of the work that
you can do during this time is to own what you project and to acknowledge
and separate yourself from what others project. If you are feeling angry
and frustrated and you notice yourself taking it out on others, take a
moment to breathe and acknowledge this. Take a moment to pull in and see
that this is not a healthy way to operate. Anger and frustration can be
taken out in other ways such as painting, writing in a journal or through
athletics. Deeper frustrations can be processed through the help of a
counselor.
If there
are people in your life who seem to affect your mood in a negative way,
then you may want to distance yourself from them. Many people have grown
up in dysfunctional and unhealthy home environments where family members
played a disproportionately larger power role. Often these people make
choices to avoid spending much time, if any, with their family members.
This is actually a smart and healthy decision to make. For others, we
may have one or two people who affect our mood negatively on a continual
and regular basis. If this is a boss or a partner, this may be a time
to separate from their influence.
Communicating
the Key to Healthy Relationships
During this
time the air element is powerful in the skies. Air has to do with communication,
relationships and community. Navigating this realm means learning how
to express ourselves and listen effectively. If we take an inventory of
ourselves, we may find that we tend to talk better than we listen, or
vice versa. Libra is about balancing the scales, finding balance in our
relationships, in our work and in how we communicate. Now is a perfect
time to focus on the area in which we have most difficulty. If we have
a hard time listening, it may be helpful to create an internal stopwatch
where we try and limit our flow of words and then actively try to listen
to what others say. Active listening is the process of truly trying to
hear what someone has to say and instead of just waiting for your turn
to talk, acknowledge and affirm what others are saying. Sometimes just
restating what has said to you can make someone feel heard and appreciated.
Actively listening helps create bonds of trust and acceptance that strengthens
all of our relationships.
Alternatively,
if we have a hard time expressing ourselves and saying what we want and
what we need, this may be a very helpful time to activate this underused
quality. Sometimes it can be difficult to be assertive, especially if
we have feelings of low self-esteem. During these times it can be helpful
to take up activities that are life affirming and energy activating. Aerobic
exercise and martial arts are two powerful ways of developing internal
energy that is helpful for expressing oneself verbally. It can also be
helpful to find friends who ask questions and try to draw one out.
During this
Libra New Moon, it is helpful to learn to balance our need to express
ourselves with the need to listen effectively. In doing so, we can insure
healthier and better connections and relationships. Good
